In the sixth book in the legendary Poldark saga, Ross is faced with a new battlefield, one involving the women whose lives are intertwined in his own. Cornwall, Although Ross Poldark, now something of a war hero, seems secure in his hard-won prosperity, a new dilemma faces him in the sudden infatuation of a young naval officer with his wife, Demelza. All four women - the four swans - whose lives touch Ross' face crises in these years. For his wife, Demelza; his old love, Elizabeth; his friend's new wife, Caroline; and the unhappy Morwenna Chynoweth, these are times of stress and conflict.
I hang on every word and can't walk away for even a moment. What a well rounded historical fiction. I have tried several audiobook in the Poldark series and am still disappointed. I don't think the narrator has the range of different characters that would make the series come to life. Perhaps I am jaded from the BBC series and am expecting too much?
Certainly one of the books must be a winner so I'll keep trying. The book continue the saga of the Poldark and Warleggen families. I found the performance of Oliver Hembrough continued its excellence!! This continues to be a terrific book series. I've enjoyed the narrator's voices, even the women. But I appreciate the insights from the characters' points of view that cannot be properly shown on a visual representation.
It took a while to get accustomed to the narrator but once I did, his talent really made this book come alive. Totally enjoyed it. I am one of the ones that started watching this series on PBS before ever reading a book. But I was intrigued enough with the TV series that I wanted to listen to the books.
The Four Swans by Winston Graham
The TV series follows the series pretty well without taking great liberties in changing the story, at least so far. But in this book you get to dive more into the characters. Plus, the book delivers more on characters not so much emphasized in the TV series, such as Sam Carne, Methodism, and his love life such as it is. This book looks at life from each of their perspectives in detail. I really like the historical aspect of this series. In this book, England is at war with much of Europe, the English government is in disarray, poverty reigns for the masses, they are hungry and the aristocrats don't seems to care but Ross does.
This is the backdrop for the story. The last 5 hours of this book went past where the latest season of the TV series ended. I'm going to try and stay ahead of the TV series so it will be all new.
The next book, 'The Angry Tides' is loaded on my iphone ready for listening. This book only excites and makes you hunger for the next one. I am loving it. Loved it. Another well written book by WG. Easy listening because of the narrator. While many novels in series tend to wane, The Four Swans presents as exhuberantly as a debut. Oliver J. Start at the beginning of the series, Ross Poldark, and enter this fascinating, but never stuffy, period of British and Cornwall history.
This narrative is filled with rich descriptions of the sites, sounds and smells of Cornwall. I loved the descriptive passages of the characters' inner thoughts. Hembrough's performance once again brings the characters to life and conveys an emotional story.
